Samaná Remembered
There is a relation between the casual family group and formal geometry in this photo that I like. It is the family I lived with in Samaná. They are in a circle, and there is a larger circle around them of dappled light and shadow with a white duck. Many household members are away working in the fields. They will return at dusk, and the conversation in their little house will grow lively.

One definition of happiness that Eli Siegel gave was "dynamic tranquillity." I see serenity in this photograph, but also excitement. There are horizontals and verticals and parallel lines, while the calabash tree takes interesting twists. One of the things I like best is the silvery light in the background shining on the clothesline. The depths of a thing can stand for the unknown. I think that having the depths bright in this photo is a way of putting together what I don't see with what I hope to see about the people in Samaná. As I look at this light now, I think, "Yes, the world is friendlier than we know."
